Cadence Dance Project is a newly incorporated,
non-profit, contemporary ballet company.
It evolved from the ballet company Cavanaugh
and Dancers which has been performing with
critical acclaim in Providence, Boston, and
New York City over the past several years.
What is unique about Cadence Dance Project
is that it is the only contemporary ballet
company comprised entirely of professional,
classically trained ballet dancers in Providence.
Cadence Dance Project's
Summer Season
Cadence Dance Project revitalizes professional ballet statewide with the critically acclaimed
choreography of Colleen Cavanaugh. This company of professional, classically trained dancers
includes former soloists and principals with Boston Ballet, Ballet of Cuba, National Ballet Canada, Metropolitan Ballet
of Caracas, and Dutch National Ballet.
The season will include Kore described by Jack Anderson of the
New York Times as a "ceremonial dance of ritualistic rigidity and emotional fervor" to the music
of Bang On A Can. A duet from Scarlet Tangents to Robert Schumann's Piano Quartet, Opus 47 described by William K. Gale of the
Providence Journal-Bulletin as "poetic magic filled with color and depth" will be presented
along with a premiere danced to contemporary tango piano solos. Another premiere will be a trio performed
to Fritz Kreisler's Prelude and Allegro with live piano and violin accompaniment. Also included will be
What is this Thing Called Love?, a playful suite of solos, duets, and trios to songs of the 1930's sung by Billie Holiday.
Colleen Cavanaugh, Artistic Director
Cavanaugh performed with the State Ballet of Rhode Island in her youth. After completing a B.A. in Art History from Wheaton College, she
moved to New York where sher studied ballet and modern dance. Singled out by the New York Times critic Jack Anderson for her "virtuosic" performances and by the
Village Voice's Deborah Jowitt as an "excellent performer," Cavanaugh performed in New York and Europe with several dance companies.
After returning to Rhode Island to complete a medical degree, she continued to choreograph, and has had several ballets selected and
presented in contemporary ballet showcases in New York City, including Ballet Builders and To The Pointe. She has also premiered ballets on Festival Ballet, Island Moving
Company, and on her own company, Cavanaugh and Dancers. Cavanaugh and Dancers, now known as Cadence Dance Project, seeks to introduce beautiful,
exciting and inspiring professional dance to Rhode Islanders, to educate the community about this art form, and to develop a large dance audience in the Ocean State.
